Your Complete Guide to Linen Care & Fit

Linen is one of the most breathable, elegant, and enduring fabrics in the world — and with the right care, your pieces will only grow more beautiful with time. This guide covers everything you need to know about caring for your linen garments and understanding how they fit.

🧺 Washing

Hand wash or machine wash on a delicate/gentle cycle using cool to lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F or below).
Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid bleach and harsh stain removers — they weaken linen fibres over time.
Wash dark and light linen separately, especially for the first few washes.
Turn garments inside out before washing to protect embellishments, lace details, embroidery, and appliqué (such as our Chocolate Linen Floral Appliqué Top or Beige Linen Crochet Lace Shirt).
Do not wring or twist wet linen — gently squeeze out excess water.

🌿 Drying

Air dry is always preferred. Lay flat or hang on a padded hanger in a well-ventilated space, away from direct sunlight (which can fade colours over time).
If using a tumble dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove while still slightly damp to prevent over-drying and excessive wrinkling.
Avoid high heat — it accelerates fibre breakdown and can cause significant shrinkage.

📏 Shrinkage Expectations

Linen is a natural fibre and some initial shrinkage is normal, particularly after the first wash. You can generally expect:

3–5% shrinkage on first wash when washed in cool water and air dried.
Higher shrinkage (up to 10%) if washed in hot water or tumble dried on high heat — which we strongly advise against.
After the first 1–2 washes, linen typically stabilises and holds its shape well.

✨ Steaming & Ironing

Linen wrinkles naturally — this is part of its character and charm, not a flaw.
Steam is your best friend. A handheld garment steamer will gently relax wrinkles without stressing the fabric.
If ironing, iron on the reverse side while slightly damp, using a medium-to-high linen setting. Use a pressing cloth over embellishments, embroidery, or printed details.

🗄️ Storage

Store linen in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated space. Avoid sealed plastic bags — linen needs to breathe.
Fold loosely or hang on padded hangers to preserve the shape of structured pieces.
Keep away from prolonged exposure to direct light, which can yellow or fade natural fibres.
If storing long-term, wrap in breathable cotton muslin or acid-free tissue.

👗 Lining & Opacity

Linen is a naturally lightweight fabric — opacity varies by colour, weave density, and construction:

White and ivory tones may be semi-sheer in bright light. We recommend a nude slip or camisole underneath for confidence.
Darker and medium tones (such as chocolate, olive, red, or taupe) are generally more opaque.

📐 Understanding Your Fit & Measurements

Each garment page includes specific measurements to help you find your best fit. Here's how to use them:

Garment measurements refer to the actual dimensions of the item laid flat — not your body measurements. Always compare against a similar garment you already own and love.
Chest / Bust: Measure the garment across the chest, one inch below the armhole, then double for the full circumference.
Waist: Measured at the narrowest point of the garment.
Length: Measured from the highest point of the shoulder seam (or centre back, as noted) to the hem.
Linen has minimal to no stretch unless a jersey or blend construction is specified. Size up if you prefer a relaxed, breathable fit.
Our pieces are designed with a relaxed, feminine silhouette — most styles are intentionally eased for comfort and movement.
